Can’t Get It Out Of My Head

This assignment is titled “Can’t Get It Out Of My Head” and is worth 2 stars. Here’s the link to the assignment: http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/cant-get-it-out-of-my-head/

This was a pretty easy assignment to complete. All I did was record myself whistling to a song that’s been in my head lately on my phone. Then I uploaded the clip onto my computer and uploaded it to soundcloud.

Can you guess what song this is?

Dramatic Reading Remix

This assignment is titled “Dramatic Reading Remix” and is worth 3 and a half stars. Here’s the link to the assignment: http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/dramatic-reading-remix/
I completed this assignment from the viewpoint of Lena.

For this assignment I decided that it would be fun practicing dramatic readings since I am one of the least dramatic people I know. What better way to practice than doing this? I began by picking a song that would be able to be dramatized. I didn’t have a specific emotion in mind (happy, sad, angry, angsty, etc.) so I just started by scrolling through my iTunes library. I decided on the song “Flowers In Your Hair” by The Lumineers. It’s not too long of a song and it would be easy to make it sound really happy. The next step was to find some background music that could be put with a happy set of lyrics. So naturally, I turned to YouTube. Here’s the music I decided to use:

I then imported that song into Audacity. Next I recorded my reading of the lyrics and overlapped it with the music in Audacity. I trimmed the music to the length of time it took for me to read it and then I was basically done. The last thing was to export the file from Audacity and install onto my soundcloud account. The original song by The Lumineers and my remix of it are both below:

Here’s the original song by The Lumineers:

And here’s my dramatic reading (please don’t laugh):

What Did I Hear Today?

This assignment is titled “Sounds Of Your Day” and is worth 3 stars. The assignment can be found here.
I wrote this post as my character, Lena.

The first sound is of my alarm. Although it’s annoying, it gets me up and in the mindset that my day is about to start.
The next sound clip is of me brushing my teeth with my automatic toothbrush. There’s not much else to say about this besides I like to have clean teeth and I’m sure everyone around me would agree.
Then, there’s a short clip of my leaving my apartment and the door shutting behind me.
Next is the sound of me walking on the gravel to the destination where I recorded my last sound.
The last clip is of the coffee shop that I like to go to near campus, it’s called “Gimme Coffee” and it’s on North Cayuga St. I love doing homework here because the atmosphere is so home-y. Also, what better truth is there to the name…seriously, gimme coffee.

I recorded all of these sounds on my phone and then put them on my computer. I imported them to Audacity and arranged them in the order that they occurred. I did this by just using the slide tool and putting them in position. I then exported it and uploaded it onto my soundcloud account. Have a listen:

Can you guess this tune?

This assignment that I chose to complete is called “Favorite Song” and is worth 1 and half stars. Here’s the link to the assignment: http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/favorite-song/

I completed this assignment by downloading the audio from a youtube video of my song’s instrumental version. I then imported it into Audacity and cut it to just the first 20 seconds of the song using the trim tool. The final two steps were to export the completed clip and upload it onto my soundcloud account. This was a fairly easy assignment to complete once I got the actual audio into Audacity.
Take a listen and try to guess what song this is!

Sounds of My Day

This assignment that I chose to do is titled “Sounds of Your Day” and is worth 3 points. Here’s the link to the assignment: http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/sounds-of-your-day/

I completed this assignment by recording little clips of my day on my iPhone and then putting them all together in Audacity. Here’s the final product:

I’ll walk you through what all of these sounds are!

The very first sound is of bacon cooking. Because really, what better way is there to wake up than by the smell of bacon in your room from downstairs? The next sound is also from breakfast. The 3 beeps is the sound of my waffle maker letting me know that my waffle is ready!
After breakfast, my family and I went out and explored a bunch of different stores today. I decided to take a trip home this weekend and my parents and I always like to go to cool places together. Today we were out in Virginia Beach and this is one of the sound clips I recorded while we were in Trader Joes.
The next sound is from cooking dinner. It is the sound of our grill opening and then a steak being put on. Sound never tasted so good. The next clip that sounds like a saw is actually my dad cutting up the steak. He likes to use an automatic slicer (guess he thinks it’s cooler?).
The final sound clip is of the music playing at the end of the movie “Fury.” My parents and I watched it together and it was awesome!!
All-in-all, today was a really great day!

DS 106 Radio Bumper

This audio assignment was required this week. Here’s the link to the assignment: http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/creat-a-ds106-radio-bumper/

This assignment was not too challenging, however, I’m not very creative so I was at a loss of what to do. I turned to http://www.freesound.org and used a couple of different downloadable sounds from that site. I pieced them together and layered some of them in Audacity and voila! This is definitely not a masterpiece, but it’s simple and gets the point across! Take a listen to my radio bumper:

Slow it doooowwwnnn

This audio assignment I chose to complete is called “Make It 800% Slower” and is worth 3 points. Here’s the link to this assignment: http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/make-it-800-slower/

This assignment seemed easy at first, however, it ended up being extremely frustrating. Plus, I am no pro at Audacity yet which I’m sure made this even more difficult.

This assignment was completed by importing the song into Audacity and then choosing an effect for the entire song. Once the song was slowed down, the pitch needed to be changed. This was the most difficult part for me because I could not figure out how to do it. Once I thought I had it, I would have to wait up to an hour for the song to change in the Audacity program before I could hear it. This may just be something with my computer, but it took so long to change anything in the song. So after waiting hours upon hours to see if I finally did this right, I ended up with an extremely slowed down song that sounds terrible. Seriously, it sounds awful… Maybe I still haven’t gotten the pitch right and that’s why it sounds so bad, but it is definitely slowed down!

Also, while just now trying to upload this extremely long song onto soundcloud to put into this post, I was notified by soundcloud that I went over my upload minute limit. Therefore, they hid all of my previously uploaded work along with this song that I was trying to upload. With that being said, I’m even more frustrated now.

I went back into Audacity and cut the song to 10 minutes. Still extremely slowed down, but only 10 minutes of it will be going onto soundcloud. Now I can hopefully get all of my work back up on my soundcloud account and have this one work as well. And honestly, who really wants to listen to more than 10 minutes of this really bad slowed down song anyway?

This is how the original song sounds:

And here is the slowed down version on my soundcloud (first 10 minutes):

Story With Sound Effects

This was a required audio assignment for this week and needed to be done from the point of view of our character. Here’s the link to this assignment:
http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/sound-effects-story/

This ended up being a lot more challenging than I thought. Not only in the sense of creating this with Audacity, but because I realized I haven’t given my character enough substance. I’m not very creative so this is all a big challenge for me.

Anyhow, here’s the short clip I put together. I’ll explain it below but wanted to give you the chance to listen to it first before I just tell you what it’s supposed to be.

So, since Lena is a veterinarian student, this sound clip is supposed to go through a short part of her day. In the clip, Lena walks in the door to be greeted by a dog bark. She then puts on her latex gloves in order to give the dog a shot. The dog whimpers during the shot. Once it’s over, Lena kisses the dog three times and then goes and gets a treat from the treat jar. She gives the dog the treat and it eats it right away. The dog then goes and gives Lena big slobbery kisses and she can’t help but laugh.

Although it was a very basic idea, it was still an extremely difficult task to do. Definitely not going under my “best work” category, but it was cool to really start to understand Audacity and downloading sounds from http://www.freesound.org/

Reverse Audio Quiz

This audio assignment was titled “Reverse Audio Quiz” and was worth 2 and a half stars. It can be found at this link: http://assignments.ds106.us/assignments/reverse-audio-quiz-2/

Let’s see if someone can guess this song! Here are the hints:
1. This song is co-written and sung by a British singer-songwriter.
2. This song is from their debut studio album, “Wanted on Voyage” which was released in 2013.
3. This song was released as the album’s lead single.
